National representatives have officially adopted a regulation to ban the use of bisphenol-A (BPA) in food contact materials (FCMs), which is set to take effect from 2026

This decision follows extensive scientific evaluations and public consultations, highlighting the significant health risks associated with BPA exposure.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) played a crucial role in this decision by significantly lowering the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for BPA due to findings that even minimal exposure can pose serious health risks. The new TDI is set at 0.2 nanograms per kilogram of body weight per day, a drastic reduction from the previous level (PackagingLaw) (PackagingLaw).  Bisphenol-A BPA

The ban covers a broad range of food contact materials including plastics, varnishes, coatings, printing inks, adhesives, ion-exchange resins, and rubber. Notably, the regulation includes specific transition periods: an 18-month period for most applications and a 36-month period for particular uses, such as certain single-use articles and professional food production equipment (PackagingLaw) (CHEM Trust).

Moreover, the proposal extends beyond BPA to address other bisphenols that are often used as substitutes but may carry similar health risks. This holistic approach aims to prevent regrettable substitutions where harmful chemicals are replaced with equally harmful ones (CHEM Trust) (Packaging Gateway). Bisphenol-A BPA

There are exemptions under strict conditions, such as the use of the disodium salt of BPA in polysulfone resins for filtration membranes, provided its migration to food is undetectable (PackagingLaw).

Fiber prices continue to inch upward, plastics vary by grade

The early summer weather accompanied mostly sunny news for MRF operators in June, as curbside material values remained steady or saw slight increases this month. But a key exception was color HDPE, which plummeted 10% from its May value.

The national average price for corrugated containers, PS 11, is up marginally by $2 per ton compared to last month, now at an average $108 per ton. This marks the 18th straight month of either stable or increasing OCC prices. OCC was trading at $48 per ton this time last year.  Bisphenol-A BPA

Mixed paper, PS 54, is also up $2, now at $70 per ton. This compares to $14 per ton this time last year.

The national average price of post-consumer PET beverage bottles and jars moved up marginally again this month, now averaging 15.91 cents per pound, compared to 15.09 cents per pound this time last month. Regional contracts are still yielding 16-18 cents per pound. One year ago this grade was trading at 12.63 cents per pound.

Investment firm details 10 years of plastics impact

Closed Loop Partners has provided funding to more than 80 companies and municipalities over its decade in existence, a period of significant turbulence in the U.S. recycling sector.

The investment organization this month published a report outlining its activity and impact over the past 10 years. Closed Loop Partners launched in 2014 with its inaugural investment vehicle, the Closed Loop Fund. Funded by some of the largest consumer goods and retail companies in the country, the fund vowed to invest an unprecedented $100 million into the recycling industry. Bisphenol-A BPA

The organization kicked off its first round of funding in 2015, providing capital to a joint-venture plastic recovery facility, or PRF, operated by QRS and Canusa Hershman in Boston, and to two municipalities switching from dual- to single-stream recycling systems.

Since then, the organization has grown dramatically to include a variety of types of financing activities, adding a venture capital arm in 2016 and private equity acquisitions in 2019. Bisphenol-A BPA

Egypt urges BRICS to promote trade in local currenc

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has called for increased utilization of local currencies

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has called for increased utilization of local currencies among BRICS member countries during his address at the BRICS Development Bank Forum held in Cairo on June 11th. Bisphenol-A BPA

The call comes as part of Egypt’s broader engagement with the BRICS group, following its recent invitation, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia, to join the bloc.

This expansion, the first since South Africa joined in 2010, has bolstered BRICS into an economic bloc controlling a significant portion of the global economy.

Madbouly emphasized Egypt’s commitment to an inclusive approach towards global cooperation, emphasizing that its strategic alignment with BRICS and the New Development Bank (NDB) is not intended to antagonize any party but rather to foster collaboration and address systemic challenges. Previous data by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) showed that Egypt’s exports to BRICS nations surged by 5.3% in 2022, reaching $4.9 billion, while imports increased by 11.5% to $26.4 billion during the same period.
