Closing the Loop with Advanced Deodorization Technology: Transforming Foul-Smelling Agricultural Films and Detergent Bottles into New Products

Recycling agricultural films and detergent bottles is challenging due to persistent organic residues and penetrating odors. However, advanced deodorization technology now makes it possible to recycle these materials into high-quality regranulate suitable for diverse applications.  Biodegradable

Paul Niedl, Commercial Head of Starlinger recycling technology, emphasizes, “Our odor reduction technology is designed to permanently remove such odors, ensuring the regranulate’s suitability for high-level applications.” The recycling process is adaptable to the contamination and odor intensity of the input material and the desired specifications of the output.

The melt then passes through continuous melt filters in the main extruder, removing solid contaminants and preventing odor release in subsequent steps. Biodegradable

The C-VAC module increases the melt surface by 300%, achieving high degassing efficiency to extract deeply embedded odors. Finally, the regranulated pellets undergo treatment in the pellet conditioning unit (PCU) to eliminate the most persistent odors.

This advanced technology ensures that the resulting regranulate is odor-free and can be used to manufacture a wide range of plastic products, closing the loop on recycling foul-smelling materials. Biodegradable

Report: Biodegradable plastics more marketing than environmentally friendly

recent report found only a fraction of plastics are recycled and plastics labeled as biodegradable in reality can take years to degrade.

One study found biodegradable plastic bags were still fully intact after three years of being buried in the soil. There are currently no federal standards regulating bioplastics, or products claiming to be biodegradable or compostable.  Biodegradable

Judith Enck, president of the group Beyond Plastics, said facilities dubbed advanced plastic recycling plants increase exposure to microplastics and pose health risks for neighboring communities.

“Chemical recycling just takes plastics heated at a really high temperature to make small amounts of fossil fuels, or uses vast amount of toxic chemicals to try to break down old plastic and make it new plastic,” Enck explained. “(It is) the last thing we need.”

Plastic production is forecast to increase by 70% over the next 20 years, with roughly half designed for single-use products, according to the report. Biodegradable

Enck argued without significant reduction in plastic packaging, consumers will continue to ingest chemicals like PFAS, lead, mercury, vinyl chloride and other chemicals found in food and beverage packing.

Magnera – a new nonwovens leader

Merger creates by far the biggest diversified producer of nonwoven fabrics.
Magnera is the new name of the company resulting from the merger of Berry Global’s’s Health, Hygiene and Specialties business (HH&S) with Glatfelter Corporation, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2024.Magnera will consist of a business with anticipated annual revenues of around $3.6 billion and approximately 8,650 employees, with a base of over 1,000 customers. Biodegradable
These will be served from 45 manufacturing sites globally – 23 of them in the Americas, 18 in Europe and four in Asia – with an extremely wide range of proprietary nonwoven fabric technologies.“By continuously co-creating and innovating with our partners, we will develop original material solutions that make a brighter future possible,” said Curt Begle, president of Berry’s Health Hygiene and Specialties division who will lead Magnera as CEO. “With a breadth of technologies and a passion for what we create, Magnera’s solutions will solve end-user problems every day.”  Biodegradable

PFY Prices Set to Decline in China as Chinese Manufacturers Offer Discounts

In the first half of July 2024, the global market for Polyester Filament Yarn (PFY) saw unexpected price increases of about 2.5% in China, a major exporting hub for North American and European markets, despite typically slower seasonal conditions. This rise occurred despite stable prices of primary feedstock PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid), which helped keep PFY production costs relatively low. Biodegradable

However, costs were influenced upward by a 3% increase in prices of secondary feedstock MEG during the same period.

Looking ahead, PFY prices are anticipated to decrease in the coming weeks as leading Chinese producers such as Xin Feng Ming, TongKun, and Hengyi plan to manage rising inventory levels by offering discounts on products like drawn textured yarn (DTY), fully drawn yarn (FDY), and partially oriented yarn (POY). Specifically, PFY prices were reduced by approximately Yuan 200-350/MT on July 23. Market analysts noted a surge in polyester filament inventories alongside critically low downstream raw material supplies among traders, factories, and end-users in China. Biodegradable

CCL Label Opens Sustainable Shrink Sleeve Facility in Spain

CCL Label, a global leader in labels and packaging, has inaugurated a new production facility in Tibi, Spain, specializing in shrink sleeve labels. Biodegradable

Advanced Printing Technology

Reinhard Streit, VP and Managing Director Food & Beverage at CCL Label, emphasized the commitment to the Spanish consumer products market, highlighting Spain’s tradition of producing high-quality food and beverages. The combination of offset and gravure printing provides customers with flexibility for frequent design changes. Biodegradable

Focus on Sustainable Materials

The facility will focus on producing Ecofloat shrink sleeves made from polyolefin, suitable for PET, HDPE, and PP bottles. These floatable, low-density sleeves support recycling efficiency by separating easily from containers during recycling. Ecofloat sleeves have been endorsed by recycling associations like RecyClass and the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP).

Regulatory Compliance and Future Plans

Marika Knorr, Head of Sustainability and Communication at CCL Label, noted that Ecofloat sleeves help meet Spain’s packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) regulations. These regulations mandate Design for Recycling and recycled content targets. Biodegradable
