Symphony CEO Urges New Government to Adopt Biodegradable Plastics

Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental Technologies, has criticized government party manifestos for neglecting plastic waste management.

Laurier emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, noting that none of the parties have developed comprehensive strategies for plastic management. While the Conservatives detailed various environmental initiatives, Laurier criticized their lack of a clear plan to prevent plastic waste from accumulating in oceans.

He also noted that Labour is no better and that Reform would prioritize nuclear energy over Net Zero commitments. Biodegradable Plastics

Laurier acknowledged the Liberal Democrats’ pledge to tackle plastic pollution and improve recycling. However, he argued that their proposal to eliminate non-recyclable single-use plastics could lead to the adoption of materials with worse life-cycle assessments.

Laurier urged political parties to embrace biodegradable plastic technology. He explained that if biodegradable plastics escape into the environment, they would quickly decompose and be removed from the ecosystem. Biodegradable Plastics

He criticized the EU for being worse, citing the Environment Committee of the European Parliament’s ban on “oxo-degradable” plastic, which has caused confusion and delayed the adoption of d2w technology in Europe.

-Life Car Recycling

The US chemical giant Dow and Italian recycler Fiori have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the recovery of demolition materials from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). This agreement highlights the growing industry interest in recycling materials from decommissioned cars, especially in light of impending European regulations.

Fiori Group, with three recycling platforms in Italy (two in Bologna and one in Rome), employs 200 people and boasts a turnover of €450 million. Biodegradable Plastics

The group specializes in recovering and storing ferrous and non-ferrous materials from various waste sources, including mechanical processing scraps, car demolitions, and civil and industrial demolitions.

The partnership aims to jointly develop a new ecosystem for recovering and recycling components and materials from ELVs. The memorandum outlines a collaborative approach to analyze the vehicle dismantling process and its impact on the quality of waste fractions for recycling, utilizing a ‘test and learn’ methodology. Biodegradable Plastics

As part of its sustainability strategy, Dow is advancing technologies for the mechanical and chemical recycling of materials traditionally deemed waste. The collaboration with Fiori Group will also involve Dow’s Renuva materials, which are derived from the closed-loop recovery of polyurethane upholstery at the end of its life.

Pryme has successfully delivered its first batches of pyrolysis oil, produced at its new plant in the Port of Rotterdam, which was launched earlier this year

The company announced that in recent days it has dispatched 36 tonnes of pyrolysis oil from the 120 tonnes produced during the second quarter at the Pryme One facility. This initial batch, considered a less pure start-up product, was sold at a reduced price, generating revenue of approximately 30,000 euros.  Biodegradable Plastics

Looking ahead, Pryme anticipates that future shipments will command higher prices due to improved quality of the pyrolysis oil. Despite the production volumes falling 500 tonnes short of expectations in the second quarter, the remaining stock and continued production will be delivered in the third quarter.

The Pryme One plant, when fully operational, boasts a nominal capacity of around 30,000 tonnes per year. This chemical recycling facility for plastic waste, which began operations in January, represents a significant step forward in sustainable waste management and recycling efforts. The company is optimistic about scaling up production and enhancing the quality of its pyrolysis oil, positioning itself for stronger financial performance in the coming quarters.

Japan to obligate manufacturers to use recycled plastics

Currently in Japan, the majority of plastic waste is “recycled” through burning, a method called thermal recycling, through which generated heat is used for power generation or other purposes.Fine modulo

The government of Japan has indicated that the country is set to obligate major manufacturers to utilise recycled plastics as part of efforts to cut plastic pollution and promote decarbonisation, according to a Kyodo News report. Biodegradable Plastics

The government aims to revise the law on the promotion of effective utilisation of resources as early as at next year’s regular Diet session, with the revision expected to request manufacturers to set specific targets and report their achievements on a regular basis.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry presented the plan at a meeting of experts, in which ways to effectively utilise limited resources were also discussed.

True or false: Bio-based synthetic fabrics can’t be recycled

The answer? False. Yes they can – but we still need to wait to see it actually happen.

Nearly all textile materials are technically suitable for mainstream mechanical recycling, except for maybe those that contain elastane.

Another question is: Are they being recycled? Currently, this is not really the case, but nor is it for fossil-based textiles. Of the 5 million tons of clothing that is discarded each year in the EU, for example, only 1 percent is being recycled into new clothes. Biodegradable Plastics

Starting from year 2025, EU countries are obliged to collect textiles separately. In Europe, currently 22 percent of disposed textiles are collected. Majority is landfilled or incinerated to energy. Of the collected textiles, half are exported to developing countries and half are downcycled to products that have lower value.

The future prospects for recycling can be enhanced by adhering to well-established materials with existing waste streams. Their ingredients can still be substituted with bio-based alternatives. Biodegradable Plastics

Indonesia pushes microalgal biotechnology for high-value products

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has championed the development of microalgal biotechnology in Indonesia to create high-value products.

“Microalgae hold tremendous potential for development in Indonesia thanks to our favorable environmental conditions,” he noted in a statement on Saturday.

As an example of this potential, Kartasasmita highlighted the work of Evergen Resources, a Central Java-based company producing Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae.

The algae produces astaxanthin, a valuable substance for protecting against the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, boosting the immune response, and guarding against the negative effects of ultraviolet light. Biodegradable Plastics

According to Kartasasmita, the astaxanthin derived from microalgae is rich in antioxidants and can be used in various products, including health supplements, medicines, cosmetics, food and beverages, and even animal feed.

However, he acknowledged significant challenges in developing microalgal biotechnology. High production and research costs limit consumer affordability and hinder market expansion. Biodegradable Plastics
