Another chemical recycling plant closure offers ‘flashing red light’ to nascent industry

For the second time this year, a chemical recycling plant built to turn waste into usable products has closed, casting further doubt on the viability of an upstart industry that has been plagued by financial and technical challenges in its effort to scale up.

Fulcrum BioFuels launched its Sierra plant outside Reno, Nevada, in 2022 with the goal of converting municipal solid waste into “sustainable aviation fuel.” But in May of this year the company suddenly laid off its roughly 100 employees and shuttered its website, as Bloomberg first reported. r-PET Bottles

The decision came just as the plant was ready to reopen after a series of technical challenges had forced it offline, continuing a trend of delays and setbacks for a facility that had initially been slated to open in 2010.

Fulcrum representatives did not respond to emails and phone calls and little is yet clear about the company’s future, while its plans to build a larger plant in Gary, Indiana, appear to be hanging on by a thread following bond defaults. r-PET Bottles

Carolyn McCrady, a co-founder of Gary Advocates for Responsible Development, which formed in 2021 to oppose Fulcrum’s plans, said her organization is still challenging Fulcrum’s air permit to build a plant in the city as it waits to learn more about the company’s next steps.

etween virgin PSF and recycled PSF significantly weakens

In the past, when virgin PSF prices rose by 200-300yuan/mt, recycled PSF prices normally followed up to rise by 100yuan/mt, and when virgin PSF prices declined, recycled PSF prices would go downward. However, nowadays, the markets for virgin and recycled fibers are becoming increasingly independent. Often, when virgin PSF prices rise, recycled PSF prices do not move; and when virgin PSF prices drop, recycled PSF prices do not necessarily follow suit.  r-PET Bottles

The reasons for this are twofold. On one hand, after substantial capacity expansion of virgin and recycled PSF, the market is oversupplied, leading to intense competition and narrower price fluctuations. For instance, the fluctuation range for HC re-PSF last year was only 500yuan/mt. The price difference between virgin and recycled PSF has been significantly compressed, frequently resulting in minimal price difference of 500yuan/mt or even recycled PSF prices higher than virgin PSF.

On the other hand, the supply of quality recycled feedstock market is tight and prices are hard to decline. r-PET Bottles

The support from cost side to recycled PSF is strong. Without significant external forces causing sharp increases or decreases, recycled PSF prices tend to fluctuate mildly based on their own fundamentals.

European Trio Targets Tires-to-Polymer Recycling

Borealis, Covestro, and Neste have launched an initiative to recycle discarded tires into high-quality plastics for the automotive industry. This collaboration focuses on enhancing circularity within the plastics value chains and automotive sector.

Previously, Covestro introduced Makrolon RP polycarbonate, the company’s first product derived from chemically recycled feedstock, though details of the feedstock’s source materials were undisclosed. r-PET Bottles

In this process, tires are chemically recycled, liquefied, and transformed into base chemicals, which are then refined into high-purity polycarbonates (PCs). These PCs are suitable for various automotive applications, including headlamp parts and radiator grilles.

“This cooperation with Neste and Borealis exemplifies our potential to recycle old tires into new car parts, supporting our automotive customers and addressing the critical issue of combining high-performance materials with recycled content.”

Neste plays a key role by converting liquefied discarded tires into high-quality raw materials for polymers and chemicals.  r-PET Bottles

Borealis processes this raw material into base chemicals phenol and acetone, which Covestro then uses to produce polycarbonates. The recycled content is tracked via mass balancing using ISCC Plus certification.

Thomas Van De Velde, senior vice president of Base Chemicals at Borealis, stressed the importance of value-chain cooperation in adding value to waste. Jeroen Verhoeven, vice president of Value Chain Development at Neste, added that this project could serve as a model for establishing circularity in automotive plastics, demonstrating the potential to transform low-quality waste into high-quality plastics, benefiting both industries and the environment.  r-PET Bottles

Symphony CEO Urges New Government to Adopt Biodegradable Plastics

Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental Technologies, has criticized government party manifestos for neglecting plastic waste management.

Laurier emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, noting that none of the parties have developed comprehensive strategies for plastic management. While the Conservatives detailed various environmental initiatives, Laurier criticized their lack of a clear plan to prevent plastic waste from accumulating in oceans.

He also noted that Labour is no better and that Reform would prioritize nuclear energy over Net Zero commitments. Biodegradable Plastics

Laurier acknowledged the Liberal Democrats’ pledge to tackle plastic pollution and improve recycling. However, he argued that their proposal to eliminate non-recyclable single-use plastics could lead to the adoption of materials with worse life-cycle assessments.

Laurier urged political parties to embrace biodegradable plastic technology. He explained that if biodegradable plastics escape into the environment, they would quickly decompose and be removed from the ecosystem. Biodegradable Plastics

He criticized the EU for being worse, citing the Environment Committee of the European Parliament’s ban on “oxo-degradable” plastic, which has caused confusion and delayed the adoption of d2w technology in Europe.

True or false: Bio-based synthetic fabrics can’t be recycled

The answer? False. Yes they can – but we still need to wait to see it actually happen.

Nearly all textile materials are technically suitable for mainstream mechanical recycling, except for maybe those that contain elastane.

Another question is: Are they being recycled? Currently, this is not really the case, but nor is it for fossil-based textiles. Of the 5 million tons of clothing that is discarded each year in the EU, for example, only 1 percent is being recycled into new clothes. Biodegradable Plastics

Starting from year 2025, EU countries are obliged to collect textiles separately. In Europe, currently 22 percent of disposed textiles are collected. Majority is landfilled or incinerated to energy. Of the collected textiles, half are exported to developing countries and half are downcycled to products that have lower value.

The future prospects for recycling can be enhanced by adhering to well-established materials with existing waste streams. Their ingredients can still be substituted with bio-based alternatives. Biodegradable Plastics

Supply Disruption Drives US PET Resin Prices High in June 2024 Amid High Demand

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) resin prices continued to surge in the US market during the first three weeks of June.

This increase is attributed to supply disturbances amid firm demand from the downstream PET bottle and beverages industry. Consequently, in the early part of the month, PET resin prices rose by approximately 1.1% due to these factors.  Polymer resin

However, PET feedstock prices exhibited an opposite trend. PTA prices remained stable, while MEG prices declined by about 2.3% due to high inventory levels.

This decline in MEG prices is also linked to demand softness and high inventory in the US crude oil market.

Aimplas studies the quality of recycled plastics from automotive waste

The SURFTOP Project develops the technologies required for recycled plastic material to maintain the surface properties and vehicle interior air quality (VIAQ) levels required by manufacturers.

In the automotive industry, the use of plastic materials for the exterior and interior of vehicles is gradually increasing with the replacement of traditional materials such as metal.  Polymer resin

Plastic parts help reduce vehicle weight and, therefore, CO2 emissions. Moreover, as one of the world’s greatest consumers of plastics, the automotive industry is steadily increasing the percentage of recycled plastic to produce more sustainable vehicles and reduce their environmental impact.

With the aim of facilitating the use of recycled and renewable materials in the automotive sector, AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, has launched the SURFTOP Project, with funding from the Valencian Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) and the ERDF.

Mixed Global Trends in Paraxylene Prices Amid Upward Pressure from Upstream Market

The global prices for Paraxylene have exhibited a mixed trend. In the APAC region, prices mostly trended upward except in China, where they remained stable. The EU region also showed stability across the board, with moderate demand and supply with no major disruptions. Polymer resin

This stability is attributed to consistent downstream demand, while upstream prices of naphtha and crude oil continued their upward trajectory.

In the APAC region, Paraxylene prices have shown a mixed trend. In the South Korean market, prices rose by 1.5%, moving from USD 1004/MT to USD 1018/MT, supported by the increase in crude oil prices. The prices for Paraxylene have generally been on an upward trend, with aromatics production potentially increasing as producers aim to capitalize on higher margins. Polymer resin

This could result in more supplies entering the market, as the demand remains in uptrend. Market players have indicated that while physical demand is acceptable, it is not particularly strong. Conversely, in the Chinese market, Paraxylene prices have remained stable due to low demand.

APK successfully scales Newcycling® for post-consumer waste

APK AG has successfully scaled its proprietary Newcycling® technology for the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste. Flexible, multi-material packaging waste is the focus as a material stream. “We were able to increase the laboratory scale by 200 times and have reached an industrial scale,” explains Dr Robert Marx, Chief Technology Officer of APK AG. “The development of Newcycling® is progressing continuously, even during the provisional self-administration procedure in which APK AG is currently engaged. Polymer resin

Our post-consumer process runs smoothly day after day and the quality of the corresponding Newcycling® recyclates is impressive. Sensitive applications such as packaging in the personal care sector will represent an important market for our LDPE recyclate.”

Newcycling® combines mechanical pre-treatment steps with solvent-based purification and separation processes. Polymer resin

This enables the physical technology to efficiently recycle complex, flexible packaging waste – such as multilayer films – and to obtain high-quality, pure recyclates. After first being scaled up based on waste from multilayer film production and tested up to commercial LDPE and PA products, Newcycling® is now dedicated to post-consumer waste.
